Volunteer In India: Patiala School for Blind and Deaf Children, Day 1

Looking at cards that the students are making.
Alan is teaching about maps, directions, basic orientation info. He brought a compass and is trying to convey ideas about distance and relationships between places.

The kids get pretty excited about answering questions! Because it's all in sign language, their hands go wild all at once.

This man is both blind and deaf (most students are either/or) and is reading a braille book.
To talk to him, you write letters out on his palm one at a time, and then he does the same for you.

The deaf students are learning how to make certain noises, this teacher takes the childs hand so that he can feel the vibrations that certain sounds make. She repeats this over and over, asking him to make the same noise.

There are few things in life which you can only appreciate with a visit to an institution like this where deaf , blind and deafblind are being given an excellent and ambient atmosphere to fulfill their desire to study and settle in life.
